What babies and families get

When the child is:

New Born

The family are invited to join Craigmillar Books for Babies and are given a cloth book by their health visitor

Eight Weeks

A Bookstart bag containing two books and items including information, a nursery rhyme place mat and a booklist will be given at the health clinic or at the family's home. Project staff or volunteers will talk with the parent or carer about sharing books with babies and about events in Craigmillar library.

One Year

A Craigmillar Books for Babies book bag containing a book, rhyme cards a book list, information, a poster and library membership forms will be given at the health clinic visit. Project staff or volunteers will be there to talk with the parent or carer about sharing books with babies and about events in Craigmillar library.

Two Years

Another Bookstart pack containing books is given at the health clinic or at home

Three Years

A Craigmillar Books for Babies rucksack containing a book, rhyme cards, information and goodies is given at a special Transition to Nursery event at Craigmillar Library. Families can collect their rucksack from the library if unable to attend.

Other resources

Book gifting at events

Books are also gifted at various events throughout the year including the annual birthday event, the Christmas party, Craigmillar Book Festival events, Bookstart in Scotland and Bookstart UK events. A book is also gifted every month at the rhymetime at Craigmillar Library to the winner of a free prize draw.

Dual language resources

Books and resources are provided to families whose first language is not English.

Bookstart Book Crawl

The Book Crawl is a national incentive to encourage book borrowing from libraries amongst pre-school children. When a child has borrowed four times from the library they receive a certificate. The project supports the Bookstart Book Crawl at Craigmillar Library by offering a gift book once the crawl has been completed.

Books in the community

Craigmillar Books for Babies provides and maintains a number of book boxes in the community, providing access to good quality second hand books in GP waiting rooms, the Housing Office, the Richmond Café and The Thistle Foundation Cafe.

Rhyme Cards
